Omitted: The Black Cowboy is an SC Featured special that shines a light on the African American cowboy and rodeo culture while examining the systemic erasure of their influence from history. Originally airing as part of ESPN’s Black History Always initiative, this program dives into the legacy of icons like Bill Pickett—an extraordinary cowboy born into slavery who went on to revolutionize the sport and inspire the creation of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, an all-Black rodeo designed to foster inclusivity and competition.

As Director of Photography, I crafted a visual approach that elevated the emotional and historical weight of this story. Through slow-motion action shots, intimate interviews, and wide-open vistas, my goal was to create a sense of place and legacy. The footage captured the grit and grace of modern-day Black rodeo performers while paying tribute to a legacy that is far too often overlooked.

This special feature reminds viewers that Black cowboys have existed for hundreds of years, and their stories deserve to be remembered and celebrated.
